The whole idea behind an online store is to sell. The more you can sell the better your business will be and the more it will grow. 

Upsell and cross sells increase your average order value. Sometimes by 2 digit percentages.

With so much money sitting there, if you don’t upsell or cross sell, you will never reach your full potential.

Besides, according to Sumo.com, upsells are 68% more affordable than acquiring a new customer. So why would you spend on acquiring more new clients that generate the same amount of revenue, when you can sell more to your existing ones?

Because they get you more money from your customers, thus they increase your ROAS, decrease your cost of acquisition and help you scale up your business.

Now let me clarify what is the difference between upsells and cross sells:

  • Upsells are products that cost a bit more than the original one, but are in the same product category. Think of a bag of coffee, when the customer adds it to their cart, they get a popup that offers a bigger bad at a discount. Which makes them realize that they can get more value for just a bit more money.
  • Cross sells are complementary products. For example, another customer adds a bag of coffee on their cart, but they see a popup with an offer for coffee filters. You need filters if you use a coffee machine. Or maybe they are prompted with a cool color changing coffee mug. You get the point

As the name suggests, this app does only 1 thing, and it does it right. It allows you to configure and display a popup to users once they click the add to cart button.

Pretty simple you might think, but there is more behind how the popup works. The app allows you to configure various display conditions:

  • Based on cart value;
  • For specific products;
  • Start and end date of promotion;
  • If the customer clicked on the “Add to cart button” or “Checkout”

The app also works with AJAX carts. And you can always get in touch with them if you have any problems.

There are some shortcomings, if you want to apply a discount from within the app to a product, the popups does not work with express checkout buttons. However, it seems this is something common amongst these kinds of apps.

With that out of the way, let’s see what you can actually do and why this app is very useful.

How does Discounted Upsell & Cross Sell help in terms of average order value

By setting up pop ups on various events, your customers will get to see your best offers right before they made their first buying decision. This might make some of them go for the deal.

Instead of cross selling another product, you can cross sell shipping insurance, extra long warranty or gift packaging. Usually these options generate the most revenue.

With options to pick products or whole categories as upsells, the app proves to be very versatile. 

In terms of costs, Discounted Upsell & Cross Sell has a great free plan that you can use to get going. The biggest limitation is that you can only create 1 offer for free.

If you want to go for unlimited you will have to pay $19.95 per month. But that’s nothing compared to the amount of extra revenue you will generate just using their free plan.

With just over 180 reviews, I know that Discounted Upsell & Cross Sell is not a veteran in the app store, but the 4.7 rating and positive feedback in the reviews do mean something.

The only missing feature that is also very important is an Analytics dashboard. I contacted them and they said that they will soon launch it. Keep an eye on this article as I will update it when they do.

Functionality ⭐4.5 of 5

The app is easy to use, has an onboarding sequence for new users and the upsell popup is mobile-friendly, which makes it great both from the merchants’ and the customers’ perspective alike.

Secomapp: Affiliate Marketing

I don’t even want to cover affiliate marketing, but oh well…

It works like this:

  1. An advertiser goes to your website and signs up as an affiliate;
  2. They get assigned a special tracking code that they append to your URLs;
  3. Each click that comes from the affiliated website gets tracked and they get a percentage or fixed amount of cash for every order they generated.

Basically you get people to promote your products and only pay them when they make a sale. 

It’s THE dream when it comes to marketing. 

You know exactly how much you are going to pay for each new customer, only pay when you get paid, and you let others do the marketing for you.

Ok, ok, you might be wondering where the catch is. I’m sure you will be surprised when I tell you: there is NONE.

All these features are included in the free plan. If you want to use Klaviyo and set up your own unique affiliate welcome emails, you can simply connect it to Secomapp with the built in integration.

Also and very important to notice, once you start cashing in from affiliates you might want to upgrade to the Professional plan, at $49.99 per month, as it comes with auto applied discounts and coupons for your referral traffic.

This is important because 20% of your future affiliates will generate roughly 80% of the total revenue. You want to offer some special discounts to these people so they can bring even more revenue. Just be careful at the numbers so you stay in the profit zone.

Initially I didn’t want to include this app category but I noticed some of my clients were having problems understanding their SEO data.

Plug in SEO features some very useful stats for beginners. You can run a checkup right from within the app and be on top of your problems as they appear. But that’s kind of it.

There is no real reason to go for an SEO app if you are familiar with Search Console and Google Tag Manager. But if you do want to get rich snippets and maybe even a knowledge graph without that nasty code, this app is for you.

The free plan is great for beginners or people that don’t have technical SEO knowledge.

Why is SEO so important

If done right, SEO can be the breakthrough you need to take your store to the next level by generating customers organically.

Don’t ever confuse organic traffic with free traffic. It takes time, resources and money to rank on any search engine. 

If you manage to get listed in the first 3 positions you will notice an increase in conversion rates, as organic traffic is more qualified than paid one. After all, people searched for your products and got to the page with the intent to BUY that thing.

About Plug in SEO

Plug in SEO reports and fix SEO related problems with your online store, like:

  • Broken links (404);
  • Permanent redirects (301);
  • Headings, alt texts and filenames;

Fancy terms aside, you will be able to see all these problems in a user friendly interface with instructions on how to fix them.

The cherry on top is the advanced, as they call it, Structured Data (JSON-LD Schema Markup) aka. Rich Snippets functionality.

Run a BOGO (buy one get one) offer to increase your average order value.

People love to get extra products for their money.

Whenever you sell something in bundles, be sure to incentivize customers with a bulk order discount. If they buy 2 or more of the same product, give them a 10% discount.

Although I have already covered upsells and cross sells, I had to include bundles and bulk orders as well, because they are an important revenue booster for any ecommerce store.

Why are bundles so important

Bundles can help you sell larger quantities of the same item, which will reduce the acquisition cost of that specific item, thus increasing your margin.

Basically if you buy a lot from your supplier, they will decrease the price, which will help you decrease the price as well, which makes your end customer pay less.

It’s a win-win-win situation.

But sometimes bundles do have unexpected effects. A study published in Marketing Science discovered that bundling reduced the number of sales for a console manufacturer by around 500k! 

On the other hand, the number of games they sold increased and customers went for the purchase earlier than expected. Just so they can redeem that offer!

It’s impossible for me to tell you how bundles will affect your store, but I can assure you that selling combined items will most certainly increase your revenue one way or another.

I find this free plan fair, after all, you can pay for the app from the extra revenue generated by it.

How does Unlimited Bundles & Discounts help you in terms of bundle creation

It is quite difficult to create bundles without an app, so this will make the whole process extremely easy.

The guys at Unlimited Bundles & Discounts give a few examples of the bundles you can create:

  • Buy product A + product B and get 10% off;
  • Buy 2 product A + 1 product B and get $50 off;
  • Buy 2 product A for 5% off, buy 3 for 10% off, buy 5 for 20% off etc.
